PEIRSON MEYER Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

2014 PEIRSON MEYER Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Review by Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a 395-case cuvée from Calistoga’s Kenefick Ranch. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 75% new French oak for 20 months. Dense purple with notes of creosote, charcoal embers, blackcurrant fruit, licorice and chocolate. It is full-bodied, rich, concentrated and layered. This is a beauty to drink over the next 20 or so years. -94 pts.

2013 PEIRSON MEYER Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in 75% new French oak for 20 months prior to bottling. This wine, which is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, shows the classic blackberry and creme de cassis nose, with licorice, graphite and underbrush. Mostly from the Kenefick Ranch in Northern Napa, it has a rather viscous, thick, juicy mouthfeel, but with great acidity, purity and overall balance. This is another winner, as are virtually all the wines being made by Peirson Meyer. Drink this Cabernet over the next 15+ years.

2012 PEIRSON MEYER Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Another dark, racy wine, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is laced with dark fruit, spices and new leather. Here, too, the style is pretty obvious and much riper than in previous years. Much of that has to do with a shift in fruit source from Pritchard Hill to Calistoga. In 2012 in particular, the heat of this site is evident. Still, there is plenty to admire in the wine's immediacy. -91 pts.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon (also from the Kenefick Ranch in Napa) was aged 20 months in 75% new French oak, and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Its deep cassis flavors, full-bodied power, and classic Napa style with plenty of glycerin and intensity suggest it will drink well for 15+ years.-91 pts.

2010 PEIRSON MEYER Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is drop-dead gorgeous. Black cherries, mint, violets, new leather and spices are all woven together in a fabric of notable class and sheer elegance. Not an obvious wine, at least today, the 2010 impresses for its silky tannins and phenomenal overall balance. The 2010 is a vibrant, mid-weight wine that impresses for its class and pure harmony. This is a typical mountain wine in 2010 long on freshness and vibrancy but perhaps missing a bit of mid-palate density. Still, this elegant, polished Cabernet Sauvignon is drop-dead gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2014–2025. -95 pts.

2009 PEIRSON MEYER Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is typical of the year in this part of Napa Valley, where the wines are rich, broad and voluminous. Less floral and refined today than the 2008, the 2009 is built on a serious core of deep, expressive fruit. Juicy dark raspberries, flowers, spices and mint are layered into the generous finish. The 2009 could use another year in bottle to shed some baby fat, but it is exceptionally beautiful and polished, even today. There is so much hidden potential here. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. -95+ pts.

2008 PEIRSON MEYER Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon bursts from the glass with generous dark red berries, sweet herbs, licorice and mint, all backed up by firm Pritchard Hill tannins. This is an aromatic, juicy Cabernet that can be enjoyed today or cellared for at least a handful of years. The 2008 is an especially lifted, floral wine from the Continuum property. The focus and energy of the finish are striking. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. -94 pts.

2008 PEIRSON MEYER Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark, sensual wine layered with plums, black cherries, smoke, licorice and tar. Striking finesse and purity from start to finish are some of the qualities that stand out most. Sweet, floral notes add brightness on the finish. Lower yields and longer hang time contribute to the exceptional elegance of the tannins. This is one of the gems of a vintage many people have overlooked. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. -93 pts.

2007 PEIRSON MEYER Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a vineyard on Pritchard Hill that was acquired by Tim Mondavi (it's the backbone for his brilliant Continuum offerings). A deep ruby/purple color is followed by notes of blueberries, blackberries, licorice, vanilla and spring flowers. The wine possesses a gorgeous texture, admirable opulence and a layered, full-bodied mouthfeel. This sensational, seductive Cabernet Sauvignon is already delicious and should evolve for 15 or more years. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered after spending 20 months in French oak, of which 70% was new. -94 pts.
